The Therapeutic Use of N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) in Medicine

Abstract

The previous chapters in this book have presented the empirical studies demonstrating the therapeutic effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on various disease processes. For many diseases, the proposed biological mechanisms of action of NAC include improving glutathione availability, acting as an antioxidant, and having an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. In this chapter we present some of the clinical studies that investigate the biological mechanism of action for the effect of NAC on disease on an in vivo basis. In addition, to these proposed mechanisms, NAC is also shown to improve vascular physiology by having a positive effect on endothelial function, nitric oxide metabolism, and vascular flow. Furthermore, NAC has been shown to improve exercise by influencing some of the same physiological processes that are involved in medical disease. This chapter provides a more in-depth understanding of the effects of NAC on human physiology to improve the understanding of its mechanism of action on disease.
