Abstract
Robotic surgical systems are developed to overcome the inherent limitations of traditional laparoscopic surgery, with stable camera of three-dimensional imaging, improved ergonomics, tremor elimination, ambidextrous capability, motion scaling, and flexible instruments. Several trials have showed that robotic surgery is safe and comparable, but not superior to standard laparoscopic approaches, with higher cost and longer time. Standard surgical procedures are needed for robotic colon resections. Recently several prototypes have been developed to address the current problems. And single-incision robotic surgery and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery are under development now.
