Abstract

Approaches to poverty reduction are often framed in terms of rational/technical interventions. This chapter proposes an alternative approach to poverty reduction that understands poverty not as a social problem amenable to a technical fix but as a universal social wound that requires strategies of healing. Using the example of the Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative, a multi-dimensional municipal strategy, this chapter explores the underlying principles of abundance, resilience and trust as the foundations of a healing approach to poverty. Through this approach, trust relationships are nurtured which strengthens individual and collective resilience, enabling the mobilization of abundant community resources to reduce and prevent poverty for the benefit of all.
