Abstract

The arid zones of the world are characterized by the minimum of annual precipitation and the maximum of heat and aridity. The precipitation in arid parts varies from 5 to 15 inches and in semi-arid regions from 15 to 30 inches. According to Shantz (1956), based upon climatic maps of Meig’s (1952), the approximate areas of extreme arid, arid and semi-arid regions of the world are 2.24, 8.42 and 8.20 million square miles respectively, i.e. about 36% of the gross land area of the world. The development of salinity is far more extensive in the extreme arid and arid lands than in semi-arid and humid lands. Based upon the characteristics of vegetation, Shantz classifies the areas as follows:
