Abstract
Although from the outside the process may seem slow and uncertain at times, the internationalization of the Japanese economy, i.e., the shift from export-led to domestic demand-led growth, is underway. The sharp appreciation of the yen unleashed a set of market forces that cannot be turned back. In unison with these market forces, the step-by-step, albeit occasionally cautious, implementation of the Maekawa Commission policy recommendations are changing Japan’s domestic economic landscape and global role.
