Abstract
Vortex sound from collision of two vortex rings at 16 different angles between head-on and perpendicular collisions is numerically analyzed using an aerodynamic sound theory for the far-field acoustic pressure which results from localized unsteady vortex motion. The vorticity field is obtained by solving the three-dimensional incompressible vorticity equation with the vorticity-potential method. The strong sound source region is identified for each collision angle. It is found that there are three regions of collision angles and that different characteristic vortex motion mainly causes the vortex sound in each region. The relation of the vortex motion with the vortex sound is discussed in detail.
