Abstract

The plasma temperature distribution during flares is derived from an analysis of Ca XIX (3.176 Å) and Fe XXV (1.850 Å) spectra observed with the Bent Crystal Spectrometer (SMM), using the fact that their emissivity curves peak at different temperatures. The temperature Tca,Fe, derived from the Ca XIX to the Fe XXV resonance line ratio, is compared with the temperatures Tca and TFe obtained from the ratio of the dielectronic recombination satellites to the resonance line intensity. During some very impulsive flares the temperature TFe exceeds Tca,Fe and TCa. This effect can be explained with the existence of a “hot” component in the coronal plasma, with a temperature within 4 – 10 107 K.
