Abstract

Unlike flexible macromolecules rigid-rod chains can only solidify under generation of local orientation. Frequently thermotropic or lyotropic liquid crystalline states are observed with these systems. We have studied the crystallization of several polymers with stiff backbones an attached flexible side chains from the lyotropic liquid crystalline states. In this contribution the two component liquid crystal of the polydiacetylene P-4-BCMU and CHCl3 is investigated in detail. It forms nematic lamellar structures Where the lamellar thickness corresponds to the number average molecular weight. Chain ends are concentrated in disordered interlamellar regions. Upon annealing the defect density is decreased and finally a separation of molecules according to molecular weight is observed. The local molecular orientation is retained by rapid evaporation of the solvent. Side group conformation and molecular packing of stiff polymers with pendent flexible ahave been studied by investigation of the crystal structures of oligomeric model compounds.
