Summary

The presence of double kernels in almond (Prunus amygdalus, Batsch) decreases fruit quality. This is a cultivar trait, but its percentage shows large variation depending on the sample and on the year. Significant differences in double kernel percentage have been observed in‘Guara’ fruits from the first opened flowers (18.51%), the middle flowers (6.75%) or the late flowers (3.55%). This suggests that the first opened flowers, in general of higher quality, have the two ovules viable in a higher proportion giving a larger proportion of fruits with two kernels. Besides, a good nutritional status and favourable temperatures at blooming may also increase the percentage of double kernels.
