Abstract
Reasons for assessing plant responses to acid-soil conditions may be divided into two categories: To develop an understanding of the cause of (i) acid soil infertility so as to develop diagnostic tests and offer advice to growers on the management of acid soils and (ii) the mechanisms of plant tolerance to acid soil factors so as to identify elite germplasm and elucidate the genetics of inheritance of these mechanisms.
Many techniques have been devised for measuring plant responses to acid-soil conditions, covering a spectrum of expense and complexity, from field experiments through glasshouse studies, to short-term root elongation studies. The appropriateness of any given technique, each with its inherent strengths and weaknesses, depends on the purpose of the research and specifically on the hypothesis being tested. Given the confounded and complex nature of soil acidity, extrapolation of results beyond the conditions imposed by specific experiments is difficult and sometimes dangerous. Field trials must be the final arbiter against which to assess success in managing soil acidity.
This review commences by discussing the acid soil infertility complex and emphasises the need to identify specifically the cause of acid soil infertility in each situation. Against this background, the commonly-used techniques for measuring plant responses to the acid soil infertility complex are discussed. Using examples from the literature, the advantages and drawbacks of field, glasshouse and solution culture experiments and short-term bioassays are discussed.
