Abstract
The protozoan parasite Theileria parva infects the cells of the lymphoid system of susceptible cattle resulting in acute fatal East Coast fever (E.C.F.). Animals which recover from the disease spontaneously resist reinfection with infective sporozoites from the homologous isolate of T. parva for up to 3 years (Burridge et al, 19 72). The longevity of immunity, together with the inability to correlate protection with the levels of antibody to the macroschizont of T. parva (Cunningham, 1977) suggest the operation of cell-mediated immune responses. This contention is supported by the ability to transfer resistance to infection between twin calves with thoracic duct leucocytes from the immunized partner (Emery, 1981) and the findings that cell-mediated lympholysis (CML) is generated in vivo and in mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) using peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) from immune cattle (Eugui & Emery, 1981, Emery et al, 1981).
