Abstract
The reflection of light from the air-water interface is modified in the presence of a dye monolayer in the spectral range of the dye absorption band. The average orientation of the chromophores can be determined by using linearly polarized light under oblique incidence. The rate of photochemical cis-trans isomerization of a thioindigo derivative at the air-water interface depends on the surface pressure. The isomerization of an amphiphilic spiropyran to the merocyanine form causes a sudden rise in surface pressure at constant area. The propagation of the resulting compressional wave has been studied by the reflection method.
