Production of cool season food legumes in West Asia and North Africa

World crops: Cool season food legumes

Part of the book series: Current Plant Science and Biotechnology in Agriculture ((PSBA,volume 5))

Abstract

Lentil, faba bean, chickpea and, to a lesser extent, pea are the main traditional pulses in daily food and the rainfed farming systems throughout the semi-arid areas of West Asia and North Africa. Most countries of the two regions are net importers of at least one of these legumes. Major constraints to production include unimproved cultivars, inadequate cultural paractices, considerable losses due to pests, labour-intensive operations, insufficient national research and extension programmes and ineffective price and marketing policies. Only in the last decade, as a result of major expansions in national and regional crop improvement research efforts, has the historical neglect of these crops been redressed in most countries of both regions.
