Abstract
Annual rainfall in Nepal averages 2142 mm, of which only about 12% falls during the cool season from October to April. And so, cool season food legumes can experience water stress during germination and stand establishment or at later stages of growth. Pea, lentil, faba bean and chickpea are predominantly relay- or mixed-intercropped following the harvest of rice, the principal national crop. Average productivity of all four legumes is poor — for many reasons: (a) the limited yield potential of traditional cultivars and their unstable yields in monocrop, intercrop and even irrigated situations; (b) water stress; (c) sub-optimal stand densities and competition with weeds; (d) poor nodulation; (e) nutrient stresses; (f) diseases such as wilt and Botrytis; and (g) depradations by pests, notably pod borers, cutworms and aphids.
