Abstract

Because of their deep potential wells elliptical galaxies provide an ideal venue to investigate the longterm exchanges of matter between gas and stars, a question of fundamental astronomical interest. Although star formation during the early history of elliptical galaxies was rapid and efficient, the metal abundance and its gradient in these galaxies indicates a multistage, dissipative, and rather complex initial transformation of gas into stars. During or following the initial conversion into stars, a massive gaseous outflow must have occurred. This is indicated by the large amount of iron-rich gas in elliptical-rich clusters, often exceeding the entire baryonic mass of all stellar matter within the cluster galaxies. This ejection was evidently driven by the large supernova rate in young stellar populations.
