Abstract
The challenge to provide producers with access to agricultural innovation has been at the centre of numerous reforms within research and extension (R&E) institutions since the 1970s. This challenge has also been the cause for the evolution in paradigms in the research to development to include aspects of participatory approaches and users assuming more responsibility. The recent past has seen a shift in system from innovation led by researchers’ and extension practitioners’ agenda to “demand-driven” innovation. As the continent strives to promote wider adoption of technologies, in particular those regarding soil and water management there is need to address the political challenges faced by especially smallholder farmers in accessing productivity enhancing technologies and information. The chapter presents a case study analyses on strategies for access and use of agricultural innovation in some West African countries: Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali and Nigeria.
