Samenvatting

Kanker heeft een toenemende impact op de bevolking. Sinds 2008 is kanker doodsoorzaak nummer één in Nederland (CBS: www.​cbs.​nl). Daarnaast groeit het aantal mensen dat ieder jaar de diagnose kanker krijgt nog steeds, en neemt het aantal mensen dat nog in leven is en ooit de diagnose kanker kreeg ook gestaag toe (Kanker 2020). Met name door de toenemende vergrijzing zal de impact van kanker de komende decennia alleen maar groter worden. Er zijn echter ook positieve ontwikkelingen. Zo neemt het aantal patiënten dat de ziekte overleeft fors toe, vooral dankzij vroegere opsporing en effectievere behandelmethoden. Er is de laatste jaren ook veel meer aandacht voor de kwaliteit van de zorg en transparantie daarvan. De patiënt staat steeds vaker centraal, hetgeen zich uit in een grotere belangstelling vanuit de kliniek voor het meten van de kwaliteit van leven en Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROM’s). Echter, zonder een gedegen kennis over de meest wezenlijke trends in het vóórkomen van kanker en de overleving na kanker is het onmogelijk om beleidskeuzes en klinische ontwikkelingen adequaat te evalueren en op hun juiste waarde te schatten. Dit hoofdstuk gaat aan de hand van een aantal voorbeelden in op de belangrijkste trends in het vóórkomen (incidentie) van en overleving en sterfte na kanker, en zet Nederland daar waar relevant in een internationaal perspectief.
