Imaging of Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders represent the commonest extraintestinal manifestations of Ulcerative Colitis. Arthritis associated with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases may involve the peripheral joints, spine, sacroiliac joints, or a combination of these. Peripheral arthritis is mostly a clinical diagnosis. Inflammation of the axial skeleton belongs to the group of spondyloarthropathies, which share most clinical manifestation and imaging appearances. MRI is currently the preferred imaging modality to investigate suspected spinal and sacroiliac involvement, since it allows to detect inflammation before radiographically detectable osseous lesions develop. Familiarity with spondyloarthritis features is needed to maximize sensitivity and specificity when interpreting MRI studies, thereby allowing correct classification and staging of bone involvement.
