Abstract
Balloon enteroscopy has become established throughout the world for diagnostic and therapeutic examinations of the small bowel, and it is now used in clinical routine work. The procedure allows histologic sampling and endoscopic therapy, which are its main advantages compared with other imaging examinations (e.g., capsule endoscopy and CT scan). Relevant pathologic findings can be detected in a high percentage of patients (70–80%), with direct therapeutic implications. Endoscopic therapy can be performed in more than 50% of patients. The complication rates with diagnostic and therapeutic balloon-assisted enteroscopy are acceptably low. The recently introduced single-balloon enteroscopy has emerged as a viable alternative to double-balloon enteroscopy in the management of small bowel disease. Technically, it is easier to perform, may be more efficient, and, according to the limited literature available, seems to provide similar diagnostic and therapeutic yield as achieved with double-balloon enteroscopy.
