Abstract
This chapter consists of four parts. In the first part, the value chain will be applied to decompose the organizational activities into primary and support activities. In the second part, shared services will be defined. Thirdly, the phenomenon of shared services in the private sector will be analyzed. Finally, the rationale for public shared services will be discussed and three case studies will be presented about US public sector organizations that successfully employ SSCs.
