Abstract
No book about animals can dispense with a description of their environment. Białowieża Primeval Forest, located in the heart of the immense European plains, represents the biome of temperate deciduous and mixed forests. Białowieża’s woodland stretches over nearly 1500 km2. About one third of that area are old growths of natural origin (Fig. 1.1). Besides being large and sparsely populated (2–3 people/km2) Białowieża Forest is spatially integrated with other extensive forest tracts in Poland and Belarus that eventually lead to still other woodlands to the east, north, and south (Fig. 1.2).
Unbounded forests flowing with the honey of wild bees.
