Sepsis Indicators in Acute Pancreatitis

  • Chapter
Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract

Increasingly sensitive means of diagnosing and staging acute pancreatitis have facilitated therapeutical decision making and helped to lower mortality. In this respect, the possibility of detecting necrotizing pancreatitis (NP) by means of contrast-enhanced computer tomography (CT) [6, 7] and the determination of C-reactive protein [9] prove advantageous. Beyond this, it is essential to identify septic complications in NP, because these represent the predominant cause of death in acute pancreatitis [2, 10, 16, 18] and surgical intervention is mandatory [4–5, 13, 16, 18].
