Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 79))

Abstract

Neuromuscular blocking agents are widely used to produce relaxation of skeletal muscles during surgical operations. Since the introduction of curare into anaesthesia by Griffith and Johnson in 1942, anaesthetic practice has been completely revolutionised because there is now no longer the need to produce skeletal muscular relaxation by deep anaesthesia with the inherent risks involved.
