Sedimentation in the Atlas Gulf III: Turonian Carbonates

  • Conference paper
Geology of the Northwest African Continental Margin

Abstract

The Turonian carbonates of the High Atlas region have been analyzed with respect to their lithofacies and the distribution of their chemical major elements by means of 42 stratigraphical sections. The geographical distribution of litho- and chemofacies illustrates contrasting oceanic and continental influences. Cross-sections make it possible to correlate the major stages of the environmental evolution from an outer shelf, over a separating threshold, to the western confines of the Saharan epicontinental sea. Deep sea drilling results reveal similar stratigraphic developments concerning the offshore area. A schematic model of sedimentation for two extreme evolution phases: transgression with a maximum pelagic realm and regression with a continentally influenced shallow water regime, is discussed.
