Part of the book series: Human Genetics, Supplement ((HUMAN GENETICS,volume 1))

Abstract

One of the most fruitful areas for clinical and biochemical investigation in pharmacogenetics is the very great individual variation in therapeutic and adverse effects of behavior-modifying drugs. These drugs are used so commonly that clinical investigations are practical and, indeed, sorely needed. We have reviewed this field extensively in recent years (Omenn and Motulsky, 1973, 1974, 1975). Here I will summarize the kinds of approaches employed in psychopharmacogenetics and some of the opportunities for new research. I will also present new data from our own work with monoamine uptake systems.
