Part of the book series: Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems ((LNE,volume 93))

Abstract

Learning control techniques based on a) decision theory and b) adaptive threshold logic are investigated in a real application, the control of a steam engine. The results bring out two major difficulties in the application. One of these is due to imperfect teaching. It is shown however that the human operator can be a good teacher if he is allowed to communicate using natural language.
