Abstract
The mechanical and physical properties of soils are important as design criteria in soil and foundation engineering as well as in drainage, tillage and other agricultural problems. The properties of clay soils are determined mainly by the clay fraction and are greatly dependent on the microstructure, or fabric, of the clay lamellae or otherwise on the number and strength of the interparticle bonds. It is assumed that the exchangeable cations influence both the number and strength of the bonds, directly, and also indirectly through changes in the spatial symmetry and crystallographic dimensions of the clay minerals.
