Parasitic Diseases of the Lungs

Abstract

Protozoa are among the many microorganisms that may cause bronchopulmonary pathology. In most cases, the patient presents with an underlying clinical condition, usually associated with immunosuppression; however, parasitic diseases should also be considered in any patient who comes from endemic areas.

Protozoa may cause bronchopulmonary pathology by various mechanisms such as direct tissue damage or through a systemic inflammatory response by haematogenous dissemination or by direct contiguity with an adjacent lesion.

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of cases of pulmonary diseases due to protozoa; this phenomenon and the appearance of “new” emerging diseases make these diseases a real diagnostic challenge to the pathologist.
