Abstract

Young athletes who practice sports following the phrase “no pain, no gain” may not be aware of the potential risk of injury, hidden in this expression, to their growing bodies.

The dramatic rise in sports participation of children and adolescents in recent years has created a significant rise in sports-related injuries to this unique group of athletes.

An overview of the epidemiology as well as special characteristics and risk factors unique to the pediatric and adolescent population, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is discussed.

Different prevention measures, pre-activity, during, and post-activity, are reviewed in order to assist parents, coaches, and orthopedic surgeons in keeping sports – as it should be – fun.
