Abstract

The surface plasmon is collective oscillation of free electrons localized at a metallic surface. Metals had not been extremely exciting optical materials for long time. However, many research works on surface plasmons have been reported in the last decade, since surface plasmons have attractive optical properties that cannot be realized in dielectrics and semiconductors. This chapter briefly deals with the basic theory and some applications of surface plasmons.
