Definition

The complete set of chromosomes of one cell. Usually represented as a map with photographs of mitotic chromosomes arranged in homologous pairs. Chromosome complement of cells. In a karyotype, the total number of chromosomes is given first, followed by sex chromosome constitution and a description of numerical and structural aberrations. A normal male karyotype is thus written 46, XY; the normal female complement is 46, XX.
