Zusammenfassung
Die neue Wirtschaftssoziologie versteht ökonomisches Handeln als soziales Handeln, das eingebettet in soziale Kontexte stattfindet. Aufbauend auf den soziologischen Klassikern prägt vor allem eine relationale Blickweise auf wirtschaftliches Handeln das sich seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre entwickelnde Forschungsfeld. Dabei stehen Analysen der Voraussetzungen und Konsequenzen von Netzwerken für das wirtschaftliche Handeln im Vordergrund. So können Studien zeigen, dass die Position im Netzwerk das Handeln von Unternehmen beeinflusst (z.B. Gulati und Higgins 2003) und unternehmerisches Handeln möglich macht (z.B. Burt 2004). Zentrales methodisches Instrument ist dafür die Netzwerkanalyse, deren Verbreitung und Institutionalisierung in den Sozialwissenschaften seit den 1970ern in enger Verflechtung mit den Entwicklungen der neuen Wirtschaftssoziologie insbesondere in den USA verlief (Beckert 2005; Convert und Heilbron 2007). Es überrascht daher nicht, dass die Diskussion um Netzwerke ein zentrales Thema der neuen Wirtschaftssoziologie bildet und sich durch die einschlägigen Handbücher (Beckert und Zafirovski 2005; Carruthers und Babb 2000; Dobbin 2004; Granovetter und Swedberg 2001; Guillen et al. 2002; Hirsch-Kreinsen 2005; Maurer 2008; Mikl-Horke 2008; Smelser und Swedberg 1994, 2005, darin besonders Powell und Smith-Doerr 1994; Smith-Doerr und Powell 2005), durch Monographien und Sammelbände, die sich explizit mit der Rolle von Netzwerken in der Wirtschaft beschäftigen (z.B. Fligstein 2001; Grabher und Powell 2004; Kilduff und Tsai 2003; Nohria und Eccles 1992; Rauch und Casella 2001; White 2002), sowie durch Übersichtsaufsätze zu den klassischen Anwendungsfeldern der Wirtschaftssoziologie „Markt“ und „Unternehmen“ (z.B. Brass et al. 2004; Fligstein und Dauter 2007; Fourcade 2007; Provan et al. 2007, siehe auch Kapitel 7.4 in diesem Band) zieht.
