Abstract
The analysis of civil societies in Southeast Asia has so far been primarily concerned with questions of democratization. From such a perspective, civil society is associated with modernizing processes and national political development. The article suggests a broader perspective on civil society that looks at both local traditions of trust and reciprocity and global cultural models and expectations which shape civic practices in the region.
