Zusammenfassung
Zehn Jahre nach dem Beginn der politischen und ökonomischen Umwälzungen in Mittel- und Osteuropa zeigen sich deutliche Differenzen zwischen den verschiedenen Transformationsstaaten. Nimmt man die Höhe des Bruttoinlandsproduktes (BIP bzw. GDP) als Bezugskriterium, dann zeigt sich, dass die in dieser Hinsicht erfolgreichsten Länder, Polen und Slowenien, das Ausgangsniveau von 1989 bereits hinter sich gelassen haben. Die Russische Föderation ist, sofern der gegenwärtige Abwärtstrend anhält, hingegen auf dem besten Weg, die 50-Prozentmarke zu unterschreiten (vgl. Tabelle 1). Noch schlimmer traf es die Ukraine und einige zentralasiatische Transformationsstaaten. Wie lassen sich diese Unterschiede erklären? Warum sind die Wege durch das vorhergesagte ‘Tal der Tränen’ so unterschiedlich?
