Abstract
The main point of this chapter is not to explain who voted for Trump but to explore the role that distrust and suspicion of elites played in the campaign, and how the Trump campaign (including what we can characterize as the post-election campaign of his early presidency) brought to the surface racist and gender biases, as well as anti-elitist populism with antecedents that pre-date 2016. The first part of this chapter reviews the various interpretations of “Why Trump Won” and “Who Voted for Trump”. The second part utilizes survey data to compare the views of Trump voters to those of Clinton and Sanders voters on fairness, representation, trust, views of elites, and other themes related to popular suspicions and conspiracism.
