Evaluation of Benign Submucosal Tumors

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

Foregut submucosal tumors are intramural lesions of the gastrointestinal tract arising from beneath the histologic epithelium. Benign submucosal tumors consist of a variety of lesions, which can be subdivided into benign neoplasms, potentially malignant SMTs, and nonneoplastic masses – each with its own etiology, characteristic radiologic appearance, and tissue architecture. This chapter focuses on the diagnostic evaluation of these lesions, including immunohistochemical composition, preferred imaging, endoscopic ultrasonography findings, and initial management.
