Water is life. Without water there is no life for humans or the countless organisms on which human life and health depend. Eating, drinking, bathing, cleaning, cooking, recreating, public health, and even many religious practices all require clean water. In addition to their everyday need for freshwater, 10% of the world’s population depends on fisheries for their livelihoods, and 4.3 billion people are reliant on fish for 15% of their animal protein intake (IOI 2014).
The oceans hold 97% of the earth’s water. Of the remaining 3%, most freshwater is locked up in ice or underground in deep aquifers. The readily accessible freshwater supporting human life comprises only a tiny fraction, about 0.3% of all water on earth (Liu et al. 2011). Of this limited supply, 70–80% supports agriculture.
