Abstract

In the treatment of atlantoaxial instability, C1 translaminar screws are an alternative to lateral mass screws for rigid fixation of the atlantoaxial joint. In addition, a C1 laminar screw can be used as adjunct to common C1 lateral mass screws to increase atlantoaxial construct stability in the treatment of advanced deformities of C0–C2. In this chapter, we describe the indications and technique for translaminar fixation of the atlas.
