Wireless Capsule Endoscopy

Abstract

The small intestine except for the duodenum and terminal ileum was always considered a black box for routine endoscopic examination until the discovery of wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE), also known as wireless video endoscopy (WVE) or video capsule endoscopy (VCE). In the last two decades, WCE has been established as a valuable test for routine imaging of the small intestine in all age groups. It is a safe and relatively comfortable procedure to perform that can provide useful information in the diagnosis of small bowel conditions. In the older adult, WCE is valuable in diagnosing lesions of active small intestinal bleeding as well as chronic low-grade bleeding lesions causing chronic iron deficiency anemia. The rare complication of the procedure is retained capsule but is not related to an older age. Pill colonoscopy is under study but is a procedure with a great promise in the older adult.
