Abstract

Research shows that alcohol use runs in families, with 40–60% of risk variants explained by genetic influences. Moreover, a three- to fourfold increase in risk has been observed in children of individuals with alcohol use disorder, even when these children were given up for adoption at birth and raised by adoptive parents who did not have the disorder. Often there appears to be simultaneous comorbid abuse of several substances. That is, those who are found to abuse stimulants often also drink alcohol excessively and/or have a high vulnerability associated with use of other substances.
