Endoscopic Management of Esophageal Strictures

Abstract

Esophageal strictures are frequently encountered by gastroenterologists. There are many endoscopic modalities to select from, yet the appropriate choice of therapy is not forthright. Treatment is dependent on a number of factors including patient characteristics, stricture configuration, and endoscopist experience. Esophageal dilation with the primary intent of relief of dysphagia can usually be achieved through means of mechanical or balloon dilators. However, challenging strictures may necessitate repeat dilation, corticosteroid injection, incisional therapy, and/or esophageal stenting.
