1 Introduction

Hemorrhoidal disease is recognized as one of the most common diseases around the globe, but the true prevalence is unknown due to the fact that patients ignore symptoms or use self-treatment (Lohsiriwat 2012). In a proctologic unit, hemorrhoid disease is the most common disease with a prevalence ranking from 35% to 55% (Johanson and Sonnenberg 1990; Loder et al. 1994; Kaidar-Person et al. 2007). On the other hand, a correct diagnosis of anal complaint set by the general practitioner is observed only in 52.4% of referred patients (Grucela et al. 2010).

For the United States, Johanson and Sonnenberg (1990) in 1990 showed that ten million people complained of hemorrhoids, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 4.4% (Johanson and Sonnenberg 1990).

Other reports showed prevalence in the United States up to a rate of 30–40% (Ganz 2013).
