Abstract

Dermoscopy, also known as surface microscopy and epiluminescence microscopy, is a noninvasive diagnostic technique for the evaluation of lesions on the skin. The skin is viewed through a low-powered microscope either with contact utilizing an interface immersion fluid or with polarized light to reduce surface light-scatter interference.

Over the past several years, dermoscopy has played a very beneficial role in diagnosis of various dermatological disorders, including different inflammatory dermatoses (inflammoscopy), cutaneous infections and infestations (entomodermoscopy), as well as scalp and hair diseases (trichoscopy) and nail and nailfold abnormalities (onychoscopy). In this chapter, dermoscopic findings of the most important dermatological entities have been described.
