Abstract

An example of the impact of plastic material behavior on the behavior of structures is first addressed and the concept of plastic reserve of the structure under force- or displacement-controlled load is illustrated. Some basics of plastic material behavior and approaches to their mathematical description by material models are then outlined, as far as they are of fundamental importance to strain rate independent plasticity in multiaxial stress states, particularly with regard to cyclic loading. This includes terms and concepts such as stress deviator, yield criterion, flow surface, flow law, and kinematic hardening. The Besseling and Chaboche models are addressed as representatives of classical material models to take account of multilinear or nonlinear kinematic hardening.
