Definition

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas constitutes a cystic entity with neoplastic proliferation of mucinous epithelium arising within the ductal system of the pancreas. Unlike pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN), IPMN is macroscopically visible (i.e. >0.5 cm), characteristically presents a papillary architecture and produces varying, mostly plenty, amount of mucin. It may involve the main pancreatic duct (main duct-type), the branching ducts (branch duct-type), or both (mixed-type IPMN) (Hruban and Guler 2010). Together with PanIN, and mucinous cystic neoplasia (MCN), IPMN is a (mucinous) precursor of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) (Klimstra et al. 2019).
