Complex odontoma
Definition
Odontomas are hamartomas comprised of dental tissues. All dental tissues are represented within these developmental lesions, including enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Some authors have theorized that the other mixed odontogenic tumors (including the ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibrodentinoma, and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma) represent progressive stages in the development of an odontoma (Cahn and Blum 1952). However, this hypothesis has not been accepted by all authorities.
There are two types of odontomas – compound and complex. The distinction between these two types is somewhat arbitrary and of little clinical relevance. Nevertheless, compound odontomas are comprised mainly of well-organized toothlike structures (“denticles” or “toothlets”), whereas complex odontomas are comprised mainly of disorganized conglomerates of dental tissues. The remainder of this discussion will focus on complex odontomas.
