Definition

The peripheral ameloblastoma is an uncommon benign odontogenic neoplasm, exhibiting histopathologic features of conventional intraosseous solid and multicystic ameloblastoma but arising within the soft tissue overlying tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. The lesion likely originates from rests of the dental lamina or basal epithelial cells of the surface epithelium. Compared to its intraosseous counterpart, the peripheral ameloblastoma exhibits a more limited growth potential and lower recurrence rate. Because of its relatively innocuous clinical behavior, some investigators have proposed that the lesion may represent a hamartoma, although most authorities prefer to regard it as a true neoplasm.
