Abstract

When writing a study protocol, just pulling the sample size out of a hat gives rise to (1) ethical, (2) scientific, and (3) financial problems, because

  1. 1.

    too many patients may be given a potentially inferior treatment,

  2. 2.

    negative studies require repetition of the research,

  3. 3.

    costs are involved in too large or too small studies.

Equations are provided, that can be used for the purpose.
