The Dominican Republic, with 48,730 km2 (18, 815 mi2), shares the island of Hispaniola with the Republic of Haiti (Figure 1). One third of its ten million population lives below the poverty line and unemployment rate averages 15 %. The country ranks 86th in tourism competitiveness; however, in relation to human, cultural, and natural resources, it drops to the 108th/140 position (WEF 2013). Once a sugarcane exporting country, it has shifted its economy to services and tourism. Over the past three decades, its GDP has grown on average by 6 % per year. In 2013, tourism revenue was US$4.6 billion, contributing to 15 % of its GDP, creating 583,000 jobs (14 % of workforce), 33 % of exports, and 4.5 % of investment (WTTC 2013).
