Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore the possibility of moral machine learning and its possible alternatives. We begin by studying artificial neural networks in order to learn about their potential and shortcomings with regard to the creation of artificial moral intelligence. We then undertake a critical analysis of the main AI-based approaches to moral machine learning which use moral value acquisition and encoding processes. The third theme to be addressed is a critical reflection on the possibility of artificial moral intelligence. Finally, we turn to consider whether the state of the art of current AI-based ethical governance offers a plausible alternative to artificial moral intelligence.

My thermostat has three beliefs: it believes it’s too hot in here; it’s too cold in here; and it’s just right in here.
